No offense.” “Um okay.” We could be neighbors!”我说。“Yeah, alright.
“Your English is really good by the way.”
“Thanks. Yeah, I lived in the States for about two years when I was a kid. That’s probably why.”
“Oh really? Where did you live?”
“New York. You?”
“L.A.”
“That’s cool. So what made you decide to come to China?”
“What?” I asked. Why is he looking at me like that?
“Nothing.” “Uh……Because of my parents. They wanted me to live in China so I can know more about the locals, the culture, basically what goes on in China. Actually, they’ve been badgering me about coming here for a while now. I only gave in until recently.”
“So what made you give in?”
Again, silence. Did I say something wrong?
“Uh…… I just got to know the school a little bit better. That maybe it wasn’t as bad as I thought. My parents were so happy I finally agreed to come they wanted me come straight away. I guess they’re afraid I might change my mind after another semester. I’m a little surprised myself too.” He smiled at me.
“How bad did you think the school was?” I teased. “I’m just kidding. But it does take a lot of hard work to make it here. So how was your school back in L.A.?”
“It’s a great school. Everyone could find their place. All my old friends were there so it felt like a second home to me.” He said.
“It must’ve been hard leaving everything behind to come here. Did your family move here with you?” I asked.
“No way, my parents are way too busy. It’s just me.”
I widened my eyes. “So you live by yourself?”
He nodded. “Yeah, I’m used to it by now. Even back at home, I’m always left alone. My parents are too busy to take care of things at home.”
“Do you know why I was so surprised? Because I live by myself too!” I exclaimed.
“No way!”
“Yeah. My parents work in Shanghai and wanted me to come with. I just couldn’t go with them. I worked so hard to get into the school I’m in now I couldn’t throw everything away.”
“And your parents just let you stay here by yourself?”
“Oh we had a really bad fight. When they realized they couldn’t change my mind, they gave in.” I said. “But I’ve proven to them that I can be responsible.”
“Well, this is me. And that one’s your house right?” I pointed to a house across the street.
“Yep.” He nodded. “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“See you then. You can call me Katie, by the way.” I added.
“I’m Jacob. It was great meeting you.”
“You too. Bye!” Smiling, I waved goodbye to him and hurried to my house.
The first day of school was a great day after all.
